ViaTV Videophones: Real Stories
Video Nurse Visits(tm) Brings Healthcare Home to Chronically Ill Patients Using ViaTV(tm) VideophonesTelemedicine, telepsychiatry and home health care are medical fields where video conferencing is becoming a popular way of communicating. The ability to see physicians, nurses, colleagues, caregivers and out-patients through regular phone lines is saving money as well as time. 8x8's ViaTV Videophone is perceived as "the perfect tool" for medical observance of certain populations like geriatrics and the chronically ill. One of the leaders in this developing area is a Clearwater, FL company called MOON (Medical Oriented Operating Network) Communications whose goal is to use "interactive space age technology" so that patients can "enjoy a level of medical care in an alternate-site setting comparable to care once only available in a hospital." Using ViaTV Videophones, MOON Communications established a new program called Video Nurse Visits(tm). This program was designed specifically to meet the special needs of chronically ill, homebound patients, says Victor Dragon, Director of Marketing for MOON Communications. "The ViaTV Videophone is a very realistic solution." "Our patients who use it absolutely love it. They have discussions with a nurse three times a week, or as needed. The discussions generally last between 15 to 20 minutes. The video allows the nurse to truly do an assessment. It's not intended to replace home healthcare or visits with a doctor, but it allows the patients to be seen by a nurse regularly. The nurse can see a range of motion and with still shots they have even been able to see the patient's skin tone." According to Dragon, an important benefit of Video Nurse Visits is "the sense of security" gained by patients who can see, hear, and speak with a healthcare professional any time they wish. MOON has set up a "Virtual Hospital Room" that is staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by RNs (registered nurses). MOON offers their clients the option to either buy the ViaTV outright or lease it on a monthly basis. The company claims that "healthcare facilities on their network can substantially alleviate the financial burden of providing institutionalized care for patients who can now be better served in an alternate-site setting." During this trial stage, MOON is evaluating their program using ViaTV Videophones. If successful, the company will do a "real, full marketing launch." Indications are good that this type of program will expand, as MOON reports interest from individuals other then patients. "Babyboomers with homebound parents here in Florida are contacting us about checking in on their parents," said Dragon. |
